Burkhalter Dairy: Group Feeding

During my internship on the Burkhalter dairy they began using the Milk Bar to feed small groups (4).

The hanging feeder allows the cows to have proper neck/throat position (to take in the nutrients to the abomasum via the esophageal groove that bypasses the rumen) as opposed to feeding out of a bucket.

This type of Milk Bar has individual compartments so that you know exactly how much each calf is getting.

The calves will continue sucking on the empty nipples for a bit until the sucking reflex abates. They will then lay down and not suck on each other (a common problem with bottle fed calves in a group setting).
